I’ll be home for Christmas…

…Thanks to you!

57 kitties placed in forever homes this year, and there are still a few days left to go. We’ve helped to find some wonderful homes for some very needy cats, and we’ve helped even more people to problem solve for kitties in their own communities. This is all thanks to our contributors, volunteers, foster care givers and adopters, who have stayed the course through tough times and good. We all take joy in every kindness that we have put into this world, by way of the animals that we’ve helped.

Please think about what you can do to make a difference now, and in the year to come! Here are some ideas for your New Year’s Resolutions…

  • Tell your friends about the benefits of spay/neuter, and about adoption or fostering.
  • Do something to help the strays in your community by trapping them for spay/neuter.
  • Volunteer for or contribute to a group helping animals, and working to improve animal welfare.
  • Consider opening your home to a rescued kitty, or even a special needs kitty, like Asia or Opie.
  • Participate in our Winter Food Campaign.

  • I am sometimes asked “Why do you spend so much of your time and money talking about kindness to animals when there is so much cruelty to men?” I answer: “I am working at the roots.”
    George T. Angell, 1823-1909

We look forward to all of the possibilities for good work in the coming year, and we especially want to send a warm greeting out to all of our kitties in their forever homes, along with the people who love them.

Thanks again for all you’ve done!

    Get ready for snuggle season!

Is there anything cozier than a couple of happy kitties? What’s a kotatsu without a kitty to share it with? Tora and Simba above are now happy in their forever home, but we have lots more kitties still waiting to snuggle up to their someone. Sweet, friendly, and cuddly, they’ll be happy to be your warm and constant companions. Contact us now to meet some lovely candidates, such as Oliver and Shima, now in Tokyo. Our ginger tabbies, Bethany, Braeden and Brenna will provide that spark your home is missing. Or there are the London kitties Chelsea and Marylebone, who will join you on the sofa while you have a mug of tea! Don’t start the holiday season without a kitty (or two!) to share it with. They’ll add such a glow to your home, and will ask for so little in return.

    Back in Black

What’s black and black and black all over? A new rescue and TNR site in Tanimachi, Osaka! 5 lucky little ones have been rescued and are looking for their forever homes. At least 5 more adults remain at the site, in need of spay and neuter. This is just one of several TNR projects our Osaka volunteers are currently working on, including one in Suita, and there’s always room for an extra pair of hands. Please contact us if you are interested in becoming involved in any way, or in starting your own local TNR project.

It’s also a good chance to remind everyone to consider inviting one of our increasing number of black kitties into a forever home. These kitties are every bit as sweet at their more colorful counterparts, and should not be overlooked! Take a minute to check out Coral, Candy, Guinness, Christine, and Cattila, or some of our other beautiful black kitties on the gallery view of available kitties.

Look forward to information coming soon about an Osaka Halloween event, to celebrate our year of the black cat, and to raise funds specifically for spaying and Neutering stray kitties in the Osaka area!

    Cool paws, warm hearts

Another hot one, but the kitties are managing to keep their cool…check out some cool pictures from the JCN Kansai shelter! Of course some of the newest little rescues are young enough to still be blanket happy. Hina and Hikaru were rescued at only about 2 weeks of age from abandonment at a convenience store. Jade, Angelo, and their 4 other siblings were found on their own outside a volunteer’s house at only about a month old. Guinness, Gino, and Tabitha were found abandoned near the shelter. Though most abandonment ends in tragedy, these lucky little ones are survivors thanks to kind rescue efforts and foster care. It’s not too late for you to be a part, too, by supporting their care or inviting one (or two!) into your hearts and home. It’s cool to be kind!

    Happy and we know it!

Summer is in full swing, and it’s a great time to welcome a new pet into your home. Having a little extra free time to spend with your new kitty means that you’ll be able to make the transition as smooth as possible, and with so many kittens to choose from, you’re sure to find your purrr-fect match! Take a look at some of our recent rescues…

Magic, Pastel, and Mikan were scooped up in the nick of time. These poor little ones had been covered in the glue from mouse traps and then abandoned in a park. This glue is really awful stuff, making it impossible for the kittens to clean themselves, and attracting layers of additional dirt and debris. It also severely hinders movement. When found, these three were being attacked by crows and would have had no chance of escape. Fortunately, they were found and rescued! After lots of baths using vegetable oil and dish soap, all are doing well now and are eager to find their forever homes.

Dayan (pictured above), Dixie, Brenna, Braeden, Bethany, and Benjamin were all taken to an animal control center for destruction. The kittens contracted Parvo virus at the center, and 4 of the siblings from the two groups didn’t survive. Thanks to dedicated volunteers, 6 of these little lives were able to be saved! All of these kittens are healthy now and very friendly.

Due to increased costs regarding vaccines, we need to raise our adoption fee to ¥14,000, which will include spay/neuter, de-worming treatment, and age applicable vaccination. For younger kittens, there will be a refundable ¥10,000 spay/neuter deposit, along with the ¥4,000 vaccination fee. Of course this amount doesn’t begin to cover the entire cost for rescue and care, but every bit helps. New fees will go into place for adoptions resulting from questionnaires received after August 15.

JCN volunteers have worked night and day this season to prevent births, save lives, and to improve the lives of stray and abandoned cats throughout Japan. Be a part of this amazing work by giving a loving home to one (or two!) of our rescued kitties, and share in the joy of making the world a kinder, happier place.
